There's something undeniably special about arriving somewhere by sea. We dropped anchor a short distance offshore and were met by the restaurant's own tender, ferried directly to Praia da Coelha and delivered onto the sand to find one of the most effortlessly charming beach restaurants on the Algarve coast. The thoughtfulness of that detail — a restaurant that comes to you, collects you from your yacht and returns you afterwards — sets the tone before a single dish has arrived.
The setting is breath taking — a secluded cove framed by towering golden cliffs, with the kind of unspoiled beauty that feels increasingly rare. The view encompasses everything you could wish for: soft sand, the glittering Atlantic, and a sense of seclusion so complete it feels as though the rest of the world has simply ceased to exist. It is near impossible to look away, and after a while, you stop trying. This is a restaurant that earns its reputation on location alone — and yet the kitchen refuses to rest on those considerable laurels.
The menu is vast — impressively so. Fresh seafood naturally takes centre stage, with the day's catch prepared with confident, unfussy skill. We began with a tuna tataki starter that was absolutely sublime: silken, precisely seared slices with a clean depth of flavour that spoke of exceptional quality and a kitchen that knows exactly when to step back and let an ingredient breathe. It set the bar high. Our main course — fat, magnificent king prawns served over a crisp, fresh salad — more than matched it. Generous, beautifully seasoned, and deeply satisfying. To finish, a lemon mousse that was a masterclass in lightness: airy and delicate, with a bright citrus edge that cut through beautifully after such a joyfully indulgent meal. Everything we tried was outstanding.
Service throughout was genuinely warm and attentive, with staff going out of their way to make every guest feel at ease. Whether you've arrived by the restaurant's own tender, on foot along the cliff path, or by your own dinghy, the welcome is exactly the same — gracious, unhurried, and entirely without pretension.
And that unhurried quality is, perhaps, the greatest pleasure of all. There is something deeply restorative about sitting here, the Atlantic glittering before you, a glass in hand, with no particular reason to be anywhere else. Time slows in the best possible way. Conversation drifts. The afternoon light shifts on the cliffs. Nobody rushes you, and nobody should. Praia da Coelha is a place that rewards those who linger. It is the kind of place you find yourself thinking about long after the anchor is weighed and the coast disappears from view. A truly memorable lunch.
An exceptional beach restaurant in a secluded cove — let them come to you, linger as long as you possibly can, and leave thoroughly enchanted.
