Ria Formosa – A Natural Gem of the Algarve

Ria Formosa is a protected coastal lagoon system in Portugal’s Algarve, stretching roughly 60 kilometers along the coast and made up of barrier islands, salt marshes, tidal channels, and sandy flats. It is one of the country’s most important natural parks, known for its rich biodiversity, calm waters, and traditional way of life centered on fishing and shellfish farming.

Within the lagoon lie several inhabited islands and communities. Ilha da Culatra is a traditional fishing village with whitewashed houses, narrow sandy paths, and a strong local identity rooted in the sea. Nearby Farol is a smaller settlement best known for its lighthouse, relaxed holiday atmosphere, and beautiful beach facing the open Atlantic. Ilha de Armona, accessible by ferry from Olhão, is a popular destination with a charming village, pedestrian streets, and easy access to both lagoon waters and ocean beaches.
